Bungee Jumping in Cancún, Mexico

Do one thing that scares you every day!

Bungee Jumping Cancun Chronic Wanderlust

There was just one question rising in my head: Why did I decide I wanted to do that? My mind went off: What if the rope breaks and I end up falling and falling and falling and falling and hitting the water? Pure fear and anxiety came over me.

Bungee Jumping Cancun Chronic WanderlustWhy was I so stupid?

I stood at the top of the bungee jumping tower in Cancun, Mexico and was not sure. Not sure of anything. My mind went blank.

How did this start?

I stumbled upon Canun Riviera Maya and their bungee tower. I’ve always wanted to try that. But my fear of heights kept me from doing it so far. I still enjoy indoor climbing and via ferrata, but this would be different. Jumping off a bridge, tower or a crane has always been on my bucket list.

I convinced my newly met friend Janice from Canada to join me. She wasn’t scared or shy when I asked her. “Yeah, let’s do this!” was her euphoric answer, my mind answered: “How brave is she!”

As I climbed the stairs to the top of the 25 metres tower I tried to focus on the beautiful and awesome view over the Caribbean Ocean and Cancun. A light breeze caught me and I stopped and took a deep breath. You can do this – you always wanted to try it, this is your chance, go and do it!

The lovely Mexican guy attached the gear to my feet, then we walked on the little bridge to the platform to jump off. I thought I could do that. Damn. I lost my way.

Trying to act cool – but scared as hell

I stood there for 30 seconds. With one hand on the rail.

I stood there for 60 seconds. With one hand on the rail.

I stood there for 90 seconds. With one hand on the rail.

I stood there for 2 minutes. With one hand on the rail, shivering.

Finally I got my hand off the rail. Now I was holding the guys hand. I didn’t want to let go. Why would I?

I almost crushed his hand.

“You can do it, baby! It’s a mental thing – it’s you against yourself! Don’t look down! Enjoy the beautiful view! Let go of everything! Just breathe and relax!”

I relaxed and let go of his hand.

The next moment I was falling and falling and screeeeeeeeeeeeming.

What an awesome feeling!

I did it! I DID IT! After all the doubts and fears I was bouncing on the rope. Up and down. Up and down. Hilarious. Freeing. Self-assuring. No more fears! Everything upside down. Laughing. I did it.

Grüß dich, I'm Viki!

At Chronic Wanderlust, I write about my two great passions: travelling and diving – and have been doing so since 2013.

I usually spend a solid majority of the year travelling to experience extraordinary underwater adventures, taking road trips through countries I don’t know (yet) or exploring my home country of Austria.

As a certified divemaster, passionate underwater & travel photographer, road trip enthusiast and individual traveller, I collect unique moments all over the world.

I don’t believe that severe cases of wanderlust – aka chronic wanderlust – can be cured, only treated. On this blog, I want to show you how this can best be realised.
