Love Letter to my Camera(s)

Love letter camera Olympus OM System

Dear little camera apparatus,

I still remember vividly the first time I held you in my hands. Back then, in the photo shop in the town where I grew up. It was a very conscious decision that I made back then. I wanted to capture my experiences and my travels. Not just for myself, but also to show others some of the places that I explore and that inspire me.

Back then, I decided on a small, really handy camera. An Olympus OM-D E-M10 with two lenses. I had no idea how to use it, but I trusted the knowledge of my dad and the salesman. What a feeling of euphoria: finally my own, proper camera.

The first steps with you were difficult – I had no idea about aperture, shutter speed or ISO. And yet you awakened something in me that made me work on my photography. The passion grew and grew. And after two short years with the OM-D E-M10, it was time to say goodbye. Now it was time for an upgrade.

When I picked up my then OM-D E-M5, I instinctively knew that this was the right decision. Another step in the right direction.

A few more years passed, during which we got to know each other and learnt to appreciate and love each other. A big surprise came from my newly-wed husband, who gave me an OM-D E-M1 Mark III as a wedding present (and for my birthday and Christmas).

This sparked a great love affair. You and me – an unbeatable team. We travelled to the most remote places, experienced cold, heat, humidity and dust. And you were always by my side. And you still are today.

A few months ago, we were joined by the OM-1 and the OM-5. The former was entrusted with the task of underwater photography, and the latter joined us for a short time in the form of a rental.

Oh, and what an ohhhhhh! I’ll tell you later what I like so much about the OM-1. The Ohhhhh was mainly for the OM-5!

What a marvellous piece of technology. Small, compact, and yet almost universally usable. It fits into any small backpack when travelling. It also slips into smaller handbags and is inconspicuous without attracting prying eyes. The OM-5 skilfully combines the latest technologies in a beautiful, retro-inspired design with great functions. And it’s light as a feather.

Dear OM-5, thank you for accompanying me over the last few months, capturing very special moments and showing me what you’re capable of. Thank you for reminding me of my beginnings in photography and for sparing my back on the last few trips.

Grüß dich, I'm Viki!

At Chronic Wanderlust, I write about my two great passions: travelling and diving – and have been doing so since 2013.

I usually spend a solid majority of the year travelling to experience extraordinary underwater adventures, taking road trips through countries I don’t know (yet) or exploring my home country of Austria.

As a certified divemaster, passionate underwater & travel photographer, road trip enthusiast and individual traveller, I collect unique moments all over the world.

I don’t believe that severe cases of wanderlust – aka chronic wanderlust – can be cured, only treated. On this blog, I want to show you how this can best be realised.

Curious to get to know me better?
