A perfect day in Salzburg
It doesn’t matter if you only stay for a day or spend several days in Salzburg, the city is definitely worth a visit. The Old Town’s green roofs, the Salzach, the Andräviertel and the exceptionally good food make me revisit the city all the time! Today I’ll tell you how to spend a perfect day in Salzburg:
This is how you spend a perfect day in the city of Salzburg
The Fortress Hohensalzburg can be spotted from almost everywhere in the Old Town. Exploring the old Fortress is wonderful and takes you back in time. The view over Salzburg is also priceless. Be sure to check out the Fürstenkammer – you need an extra ticket, but it’ll be worth it for sure. You can reach the Fortress either on foot or by taking the funicular.
Salzburg Old Town
The easiest way to explore the Old Town is to take a walk around. Without a plan in mind, just go on a stroll. Keep an eye out for the Fortress Hohensalzburg and you won’t get lost!
The view, from the somewhat hidden catacombs at the Petersfriedhof, of the fortress and over the city is amazing. Mozartplatz, Residenzplatz, and Getreidegasse – Mozart’s birthplace is here – are worth seeing too. The Mirabell Garden with Mirabell Palace is particularly beautiful – it is a very popular wedding spot pretty much all year round, so don’t be surprised if somebody is getting married the day you visit.
Dining in Salzburg
Bärenwirt serves traditional Austrian food. The spaetzle with cheese – depending on the season also with wild garlic – are absolutely delicious. Don’t forget to make a reservation!
The Heart of Joy in the Andräviertel have specialized in vegan and vegetarian dishes – it’s cozy there too.
Coffee and cake in the Old Town at Cafe Tomaselli – grab a table on the terrace if the sun is out!
Important: many restaurants and cafés are closed on Mondays and bank holidays.
Tips for your perfect day in Salzburg
For an overview of the city of Salzburg, you can find a good overview in the Marco Polo Travel Guide Salzburg and Surroundings. But if you are also drawn out of the city you can get inspired for the entire federal state of Salzburg and the Salzkammergut.
All sights in the city of Salzburg are free with the Salzburg Card. The card is not only good for the city of Salzburg, but also for other parts of Salzburg (the Federal State) and even the Salt Mine in Hallstatt.
The Salzburg Card is available for 24, 48 or 72 hours and costs 25€, 33€ or 38€ – the current prices and discounts can be found here.
Is it worth it to buy the Salzburg Card? The purchase is definitely worth it if you plan on visiting several museums and the Fortress Hohensalzburg.
