Perfect for the winter: Hiking Mugel
I cannot wait for the winter and am already planning more winter hikes! But let me tell you about my last hike just a couple of days ago. I hiked our backyard mountain Mugel in Leoben. It’s an easy, quick hike and there are plenty of different paths to choose from – something for everyone!
This is definitely one of my favourite hikes, even though it takes a bit longer to get atop in the winter than it does in the summer. There are two different car parks, one for the summer and one for the winter. The summer car park is further into the mountain and not accessible in the winter for safety reasons.
The hike itself is stunning, the path leads you through a forest before you get to a field full of grazing cows (only in the summer of course!). The view is absolutely spectacular and on a clear day, you can see as far as Bruck an der Mur and Kapfenberg.
Hike time in the summer: ca 1,5 hours
Hike time in the winter: depending on the snow, between 2-4 hours
The last bit of the hike is quite steep hence a bit of a challenge but delicious Austrian food like cheesy dumplings, toasties or strudel with soft quark cheese awaits you in the mountain hut.
Starting point Leoben
Perfect hike! This is the longest of all hiking routes. You start at the main square in Leoben and walk past “Pambichlerwatte” and “Schmollhube” all the way to Mugel. Bonus: you don’t need a car!
Hike time is approx. 3.5 hours – you can make it in about three hours if you walk faster.
The mound before getting to the mountain hut is a bit tricky and the path isn’t clearly marked. Watch your step!
Starting point Gössgraben
This is the shortest and most boring (in my opinion anyway) route up to Mugel. It takes about an hour to hike from the starting point to the mountain hut. You hike along a forest road which makes it quite easy and suitable for beginners.
