The New Year has only just begun and already, I find myself starting out at full speed and giving myself little time to relax during the holidays. I spent the last few Christmas holidays away, so this year I enjoyed a short break in Austria’s neighbouring country Hungary. And my conclusion is: I should do it much more often!

In this blog post, you’ll find a few cosy places not far from the Austrian border that are definitely worth a weekend trip.

Our Itinerary

Cosy start in Sopron

We started our mini road trip in Hungary almost directly after the border – in Sopron. And if you know me, you know that I’m not a fan of big cities and that I feel most comfortable in small towns. And that is just what Sopron is! The city centre seems cosy and a bit sleepy to me – this may also be due to the fact that we visited shortly after the holidays and most of the visitors had already gone.

On the one hand it was the perfect location that led me to Sopron, but on the other hand, it was also a very special accommodation. Only a few minutes away from the city centre is a former monastery on a hill – with a great view of the city – that was transformed into a hotel.

Esterhazy Castle in Fertöd

Relaxed and ready for the new day, we started it with a walk through Esterhazy Castle, which is located in the small town of Fertöd, less than a quarter of an hour from Sopron. The former princely residence is one of the largest rococo-style castles in Hungary. A certain resemblance to Schönbrunn Palace cannot be denied!

Pure relaxation in Sarvar’s hot springs

As we have ascribed the motto of this trip to relaxing and unwinding, the hot thermal springs in Hungary could not be missing on our short trip. And so we spent two really relaxed and cosy days in one of the thermal oases in Sarvar. Not only the hot water, the comfortable deck chairs, and the cosy atmosphere are perfect, but also to finally have time for ourselves again and to read some books. Also what you get for your buck is amazing compared to some spas in Austria or other countries. Additionally, Sarvar is ideal for a day trip (if you live close to the Hungarian border or are starting or ending your road trip in the area).

Short Break in Köszeg

Before we went back to Austria the next day, we stopped at the small border town Köszeg. As the past few days were mainly marked by a snow-covered sky, we said goodbye to Hungary with a short walk under the bright blue sky.

Make sure to check out the stories of my trip on my Instagram profile – they’re all saved in my highlights!

Which places in Hungary are your “go tos” for short or longer breaks and road trips? I’m curious, let me know in the comments below!

Viktoria Urbanek Travel Blog Chronic Wanderlust

Grüß dich, I'm Viki!

At Chronic Wanderlust, I write about my two great passions: travelling and diving – and have been doing so since 2013.

I usually spend a solid majority of the year travelling to experience extraordinary underwater adventures, taking road trips through countries I don’t know (yet) or exploring my home country of Austria.

As a certified divemaster, passionate underwater & travel photographer, road trip enthusiast and individual traveller, I collect unique moments all over the world.

I don’t believe that severe cases of wanderlust – aka chronic wanderlust – can be cured, only treated. On this blog, I want to show you how this can best be realised.
