My Compass Tattoo – a different kind of Souvenir

It already happened in January and only few know it. Finally (!) I did it. Everyone who’s carefully read the title already knows 🙂

So: Yes, I did it – I got a tattoo. In Mexico.

After bouncing back and forth – initially I wanted to get my tattoo done in Salzburg – I looked for tattoo studios in Playa del Carmen and the perfect artist.

The Design – a Compass

… the one thing I knew for certain was that I wanted – no I NEEDED a compass. I love how it symbolises travelling and it has become very important to me. Still, I wanted an individually designed compass and not something that has been done over and over again.

I got inspired by Pinterest and chose different parts of different tattoos that I wanted to be in my compass tattoo.

I didn’t want perfect lines, I wanted it to look a bit old and vintage.

Watercolour like the Ocean

Then there was the question of colours. I didn’t want it to be solely black and white. I didn’t want it to be a thousand colours either. When I first saw watercolour tattoos I fell in love with them.

I wanted to show off my deep passion for the ocean so I chose a set of blues. Also, I wanted to integrate my love for diving, but I didn’t want to get a fish or a coral. So I went for the blue splashes.

Fly, fly high!

And then I wanted to add a plane. But I don’t much like the plane icons that are around so I went for a paper plane option – and I LOVE it! Also the trajectory shouldn’t be perfect, because many things don’t go according to plan.

Pain?

When I was in Playa del Carmen a friend came visiting me from Canada. She got a new tattoo as well. I could tell that she was in a lot of pain while the artist tattooed her.

I was about to cancel. Then it was my turn, I lay there cramped and almost crushed Janice’s hand and when the artist started I had to laugh out loud. I didn’t feel any sort of pain. Maybe it was the spot where I got tattooed – my tattoo is on my left inner ankle – or I’m just more resistant to pain than she. Big girls don’t cry, right? 🙂

Do you have a tattoo? What did you get and where did you get it? I’d love to know! Comment below!
